Beer Family
Alan Garner & Mythology
Beers Inspired by the Stories from my younger days and the Ancient Magic of Our Lands
Alan Garner’s stories have long cast a spell upon my imagination. His works — The Weirdstone of Brisingamen, The Moon of Gomrath, and Boneland — are not merely tales of adventure, but invocations of something older, deeper, and profoundly rooted in the soil beneath our feet. They speak of a Britain where the boundaries between the everyday and the eternal grow thin; where children stumble into realms of myth, and where ancient powers still breathe through stone, water, and wood.
This collection pays tribute to that genius — to the author who gave form to the forgotten spirits of our land and voice to its ancient silence. Of all his characters, it is Susan who remains closest to my heart: her awakening affinity with the Old Magic, her possession and peril, and her final victory purchased at the cost of mortality itself. Through her journey, Garner reminds us that enchantment is never gentle — that the price of touching the divine is to be forever changed by it.
These beers are brewed in honour of that transformation: to capture the light and shadow of myth, the chill of the moonlit lake, and the fierce beauty of the old powers that never truly died. They are offerings to the timeless stories that shaped my childhood — and to the land that still hums with their echo.

In the stillness of a moon-washed night, when mortal and divine brush like whispering silk, Apotheosis captures the moment of rising — a luminous golden ale born of pale malt, wildflower honey and moonlit botanicals. Brewed in honour of the Sisters of the Moon and the fabled ascent of Susan to their radiant realm, it glows with soft celestial warmth and a touch of melancholy sweetness. Each sip is a passage upward: from earth to sky, from youth to grace, from the human heart to the realm of goddesses. A beer of beauty, serenity and transcendence — the taste of becoming more than mortal.
Einherjar
6.8% ABV
Forged in Wendfire — The Riders of the Old Magic
From the ash of the old world they come — riders of flame and fury, bound to the ancient Wendfire that once scorched the northern sky. When their cry breaks the silence — “We Ride!” — the earth trembles and the air is alive with smoke and heat.
Einherjar is the taste of that awakening: a Smoked Red Ale of deep amber glow and raw, earthy fire. Beneath its scarlet crown lies the heat of horseradish root, rising through layers of smoked malt and oak-red grain — a flavour both fierce and grounding, where flame meets soil.
This is no gentle heat, but the breath of the Old Magic — primal, living, and eternal. When the Wendfire burns… they ride again.
Esenaroth
9.2% ABV
The word that bridges worlds.
When the Old Magic rose to meet the High, the Word was spoken — and all creation held its breath.
Esenaroth is that moment of conjunction: the instant when light and stone, heaven and earth, became one.
It is the utterance that cannot be contained, the sound that remakes silence, the power that endures beyond understanding.
Esenaroth is a Celestial Golden Tripel, brewed where strength meets serenity.
Wildflower honey and ancient grains give it radiant depth, while its golden clarity speaks of revelation and renewal.
Each sip glows with warmth and stillness — the taste of the Word made manifest.
“Some words are not spoken to be heard — but to be endured.”
Flowers not Owls
4.5% ABV
Traditional English Bitter, based upon Flowers Original — 4.5% ABV
There was once a pattern that could be read two ways — a secret folded between myth and memory.
In one light, it became feathers and flight; in another, petals and renewal.
From that same uneasy beauty comes Flowers not Owls — a quietly mischievous bitter that balances malted warmth and meadow sweetness, carrying a whisper of the uncanny beneath its calm surface.
Brewed in tribute to Alan Garner’s The Owl Service, this ale celebrates the fine line between what we see and what we sense — and the stories that wait in the pattern between.
Stromkarl
4.9% ABV
He sings of the Old Magic men have forgotten.
On the golden slopes above Alderley Edge, the Stromkarl sits upon the ancient stone, drawing his song from air and sunlight. His melody is clear and pure — yet within it stirs the Old Magic, the deep remembering that lies beneath the hills.
To hear his tune is to be changed: it awakens the part of the soul that knows the world once spoke in other voices.
Stromkarl is a Nordic Herbal Kölsch, cool and bright as a woodland spring, brewed with sweet woodruff, meadowsweet, and elderflower.
A clear golden ale that sings of sunlight, stone, and memory — gentle on the tongue, but carrying echoes of the forgotten song that shaped the land.
“The melody fades, but the silence it leaves behind is not empty.”
WidowMaker
5.8% ABV
Inspired by: The Weirdstone of Brisingamen by Alan Garner
A beer born of legend and childhood wonder, Widowmaker pays tribute to Alan Garner’s haunting tales beneath Alderley Edge — where earth, stone, and ancient power converge. Rich British malts form a deep amber body with notes of toffee, fruitcake, and gentle warmth, balanced by a noble hop bitterness that lingers like a half-remembered spell. Brewed to honour the mythic craftsmanship of old England, it celebrates imagination, storytelling, and the magic that first sparks a lifelong love of the written word. Widowmaker — for those who still believe that somewhere in the hills, enchantment endures.
Beer Family
Aviation
The Haywards Brewery Aviation Series is a collection brewed for those who look upward.
These beers celebrate the romance, danger, engineering and sheer audacity of flight, from polished propellers and canvas wings to cockpit leather, cloud-lit horizons and the low growl of engines warming at dawn. Each beer takes its inspiration from aviation history, myth and imagination: the glamour of golden-age pilots, the courage of wartime crews, the elegance of navigation, and the quiet thrill of leaving the ground behind.
This is not simply a range of beers about aircraft. It is a tribute to the human urge to fly: to plot a course, trust the machine, read the sky, and return with a story worth telling. Some beers in the series are crisp and bright, built for altitude and sunlight; others are darker, maltier and more brooding, carrying the weight of night operations, old hangars and oil-stained bravery.
From the Belgian lift and citrus flare of Aviatrix, to the vintage precision of Himmelmädchen, to the rich, steady resolve of Tailgunner, the series spans styles as varied as aviation itself. Each label is designed as a small poster from an imagined airfield archive: part brewery art, part flight log, part salute from another era.
The Aviation Series is for pilots, dreamers, engineers, armchair navigators, airshow wanderers, and anyone who has ever stopped mid-sentence at the sound of an engine overhead.
Brewed with pride. Inspired by the sky. Best enjoyed after landing.
Aviatrix
9.2% ABV
Inspired by: La Chouffe IPA
Daring, graceful, and aerodynamically adventurous, Aviatrix soars where few beers dare to fly. A golden Belgian IPA brewed from Pilsner and wheat malts, it lifts from the runway with a bright caramel sweetness before climbing into a storm of hops. Magnum, Cascade, Amarillo, and Citra deliver a bouquet of citrus, spice, and floral lift, while Belgian yeast imparts its signature peppery altitude. Smooth yet commanding, this beer is an airborne symphony of strength and finesse — a celebration of freedom, precision, and the spirit of flight itself.
HimmelMadchen
4.9% ABV
Inspired by: Classic Bavarian Pilsners and the purity of the Reinheitsgebot
Brewed in strict adherence to the German purity law, Himmel Mädchen embodies clarity, precision, and timeless style. A delicate marriage of Pilsner and Vienna malts provides a pale golden body with a soft, bready sweetness, while Hallertau Mittelfrüh, Tettnang, and Saaz hops lend refined floral notes and a gentle, noble bitterness. Fermented cool with a German lager yeast and lagered to perfection, the result is a crisp, clean pilsner that evokes the golden age of aviation and European craftsmanship — smooth, elegant, and unmistakably pure.
Tailgunner
3.2% ABV
A dark mild brewed in tribute to the lonely courage of the wartime rear gunner: the last pair of eyes in the night sky, watching the black behind. Based on the award-winning Penzance Mild, this beer is smooth, malt-led and quietly complex, with Maris Otter at its heart, dark crystal warmth, and gentle roasted depth from chocolate and black malts. Fuggle hops keep the bitterness low and traditional, allowing soft caramel, cocoa and dark toast to glide through the glass. Low in swagger but rich in character, Tailgunner is a contemplative ale for dim lights, old stories, and safe returns
Beer Family
British Aesthetic
The Haywards Brewery British Aesthetic Series is a celebration of these islands in malt, hops, memory and myth.
This is the range where Haywards Brewery turns toward hedgerows, market towns, old stone bridges, county pride, pub signs, industrial smoke, green hills, rain-dark lanes and the comforting glow of a bar at closing time. These beers are brewed in tribute to Britain not as a museum piece, but as a living patchwork of place, character and story: Shropshire iron and Yorkshire dales, Midlands industry and country-house eccentricity, local legends and half-remembered holidays.
The series leans into the great British brewing tradition: bitters with quiet dignity, milds with deep fireside warmth, porters with a black-velvet hush, strong ales that seem to arrive wearing tweed and carrying opinions. They are not showy beers. They have backbone, balance and a proper handshake.
Each beer in the British Aesthetic Series is designed to feel rooted. Some honour a landscape. Some nod to famous sons and daughters. Some are built around personal recollection: a summer in Herriot country, a walk home from a brewery pub, an affection for old England’s craft, invention and oddness. Together, they form a liquid gazetteer of Haywards Brewery’s home-grown imagination.
The labels carry the same spirit: pastoral, historic, sometimes comic, sometimes grand, always unmistakably British. They belong to a world of enamel signs, county crests, railway posters, village noticeboards, brass pumps, oak bars and stories told with a pint in hand.
The British Aesthetic Series is brewed for those who understand that beer can be more than refreshment. It can be place, memory, weather, humour, pride and belonging, all gathered into a glass.
Rooted in Britain. Brewed in character. Best enjoyed with a view, a story, or a proper pub table.

Pale malt gives it its sturdy heart, crystal malt adds rounded sweetness, while chocolate malt and roasted barley bring deep colour, dark toast and a touch of rustic gravity. Old & Peculiar is a glass raised to parents, holidays, youthful overconfidence, and the strange magnificence of remembered places

A proper fireside bitter: warm-hearted, familiar, and best served with good company, weather at the window, and a pork pie within reach. Based on Tetley Best Bitter, Ethnic Mollie is a classic English ale with pale malt at its centre, a touch of crystal for amber sweetness, and traditional Fuggle and East Kent Goldings hops for earthy balance and gentle floral lift. It is homely without being plain, comforting without being dull: the sort of ale that settles into the room, pulls up a chair, and makes the evening feel properly arranged.
Flying Teapot
8.3% ABV
In the swirling folds of the Upper Aether, Captain Hayward pilots his faithful Flying Teapot across the cosmic airwaves. But beware — for no sooner has he brewed a steady course than the Pot Head Pixies arrive, chattering in harmonics only gnomes can hear. With a burst of matcha light and citrus-sweet vapour trails, they pull the Flying Teapot into a psychedelic dimension where nothing is quite as it seems… except the beer, of course, which is always exactly what you need.
Infused with emerald tea leaves, lifted by celestial hops, and finished with a whisper of pixie magic, this shimmering Imperial IPA invites you to ride the radio waves and drink in the invisible.

Ni! Ale
4.7% ABV
A creamy, smooth and sessionable dark nitro porter, brewed in solemn tribute to the most unreasonable knights ever to lurk in a shrubbery. Ni! Ale takes the spirit of absurd British comedy and gives it a velvet-black cloak: pale, Munich and amber malts provide depth and biscuit warmth, while chocolate malt, roasted barley and oats create a soft cascade of coffee, cocoa, toast and dark caramel. Fuggle, East Kent Goldings and a restrained touch of Bramling Cross bring earthy English bitterness with a faint hedgerow-fruit lift. Best served cool, smooth and cascading, preferably beside roast meat, mature cheddar, and absolutely no herrings
Old & Peculiar
4.7% ABV
A dark, rich ale brewed in affectionate tribute to Theakston’s Old Peculier, and to a summer memory steeped in Yorkshire air, brewery yards, pub doors, family holidays, and the hazardous navigation of cabbage patches after The Bear at Masham. Shropshire Pride
4.5% ABV

Thunderbox Express
5.8% ABV
Inspired by: Coalbrookdale at Night by Philip James de Loutherbourg (1801) and the iron foundries of Shropshire
A dark ale that burns with both heritage and heart, Thunderbox Express is brewed in homage to the fiery furnaces of Coalbrookdale — birthplace of Britain’s Industrial Revolution and home to the Hayward family legacy. Pale and crystal malts lay down a bed of chocolate and caramel richness, while Citra and Amarillo hops bring a modern citrus spark. A touch of chilli provides a subtle lingering heat, evoking the forge’s glow beneath the Ironbridge sky. Bold, evocative, and unapologetically local, Thunderbox Express is beer as memory — a tribute to Shropshire’s spirit of fire, steel, and invention.
Wayfarers Reward
7.7% ABV
Wayfarers Reward, a Belgian Trappist Dubbel.
There are beers inspired by places, and beers inspired by people — but Wayfarer’s Reward belongs to the rare few shaped by the quiet triumphs of the journey itself. Brewed in honour of the lone traveller who presses on through wind-softened hills and moss-bright valleys, it celebrates the moment when the path opens to the cool breath of a hidden waterfall at day’s end.
This Belgian Dubbel draws its depth from dark fruits and warm caramel malts, lifted by the gentle sweetness of raisin and the contemplative spice of abbey-fermented yeast. Rich, restorative and quietly uplifting, it is a beer for wanderers, ramblers, pilgrims and all who know the joy of arriving — not at a destination, but at a moment of peace.
Beer Family
Inspired by Rush
Beers Brewed in Honour of the Sound and Spirit that Shaped Me
If Alan Garner’s words opened a doorway to myth, then the music of my youth filled it with light and motion. These beers draw their soul from the soundtracks of awakening — the early works of Rush, where Neil Peart’s lyrics reached beyond the ordinary to embrace the genius of Ayn Rand, championing reason, will, and the unashamed power of the individual spirit. That philosophy — of standing firm in one’s truth and daring to create without apology — has always resonated deeply with me, and it finds quiet expression here, in the craft of brewing itself.
Yet these creations are not all fire and intellect. They also echo the dreamlike resonance of Pink Floyd, whose psychedelic soundscapes and Dave Gilmour’s aching guitar tones have always touched something wordless within me — that space between melancholy and transcendence where sound becomes emotion and time itself seems to pause.
Each beer in this collection is an homage to those artists and moments: to the rush of discovery, the introspective shimmer of the Floydian dream, and the enduring truth that art — whether in music, words, or beer — is our finest rebellion against the silence.
Anthem
9.6% ABV
In the meeting of mind and melody, philosophy and fire, stands Anthem — a radiant tribute to two uncompromising creators: Ayn Rand, the architect of reason and selfhood, and Neil Peart, the poet of liberty and the spirit unfettered. From Rand’s declaration that “the individual is the smallest minority” to Peart’s immortal cry to “live for yourself — there’s no one else more worth living for,” Anthem draws its strength from the same luminous conviction: that the pursuit of excellence, truth, and joy is the highest calling of ma. In the glass, this philosophy becomes tangible — a Golden Strong Ale of dazzling clarity and inner warmth. Belgian yeast esters ascend like ideas in flight, malt and noble hops intertwine in perfect equilibrium, and the finish lingers long — bright, assertive, and unforgettable.
Brewed in the spirit of reason, rhythm, and rebellion, Anthem is a celebration of the free mind and the self-made soul.
Raise your glass not to the gods, but to the grandeur of consciousness itself.
Beneath Between and Behind
5.0% ABV
Inspired by: Rush – “Beneath, Between & Behind” (1975) and Belgian strong ale
Brewed as both a tribute and a meditation, Beneath, Between and Behind explores the light and shadow that shape all acts of creation. Rich malts provide warmth and foundation — the “beneath” — while layers of fruit, spice, and amber sweetness form the “between.” Finally, subtle oak and time lend depth and calm to the “behind.” Bottle-conditioned and designed to mature gracefully, this ale rewards reflection as much as indulgence. Complex, contemplative, and unmistakably crafted with intent, it stands as a brewer’s hymn to artistry, ambition, and the quiet spaces where inspiration ferments.
Lamneth
4.5% ABV
A bitter of passage, pilgrimage and peculiar wisdom, Lamneth is brewed for the Rush collection in honour of the strange, searching epic that closes Caress of Steel. Based on Courage Directors Bitter, it begins with the familiar strength of pale malt, crystal warmth and caramalt sweetness, then wanders through Fuggle bitterness and East Kent Goldings aroma like signposts on a mythic road. There are Didacts and Narpets in its rhythm, temptation at the bridge, bright libations, searching, testing, and finally the quiet reward of arrival. Amber, balanced and gently assertive, Lamneth is a beer for those who know that the journey may be eccentric, but the destination still glows.
Temples of Syrinx
8.5% ABV
Temples of SYRINX – Imperial Rye IPA
A beer of command and defiance.
Haywards Brewery’s Temples of Syrinx channels the industrial precision and philosophical rebellion of Rush’s 2112.
Layered with pale and rye malts, it delivers a crisp, peppery foundation over which waves of citrus, pine, and metallic brightness resound. At 8.8%, it is disciplined yet dangerous — the taste of perfect order holding back chaos.
“We are the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx — our ales are the laws of the land.”
Power. Balance. Revolution in a glass.
The Light of I
9.6% ABV
A revelation in gold.
From the quiet halls of thought emerges The Light of I — a golden ale born of reflection and awakening. Brewed in the grand Belgian tradition, it gleams with luminous clarity and a deceptive strength, inviting the drinker toward contemplation as much as pleasure.
Notes of honeyed malt, white fruit and clove rise through a soft effervescence, unfolding into a dry, radiant finish — as if sunlight itself were rendered in glass. Beneath its brightness lies quiet depth: a balance of warmth and restraint, intellect and intuition, shadow and illumination.
The Light of I celebrates the moment of discovery — when the individual spark endures against the silence. To know and to be.
The Necromancer
11.2% ABV
Forged in the twilight between science and sorcery, The Necromancer stands as one of Haywards Brewery’s most enigmatic creations — a dark saison of Belgian lineage and English craft. Beneath its obsidian surface lies a world of deep malt complexity, where Munich and Special B bring burnt sugar and raisin, softened by wheat and the ghostly wisp of beechwood smoke.
Black pepper and orange peel summon a flicker of light through the shadows, while the expressive Belgian yeast breathes life into the darkness with subtle fruit and spice. Long fermentation and slow conditioning reveal an ale both haunting and harmonious — commanding yet refined.
A beer for reflection, mystery and firelight, The Necromancer pays tribute to the timeless spirit of Rush’s epic tale, where travellers face the keeper of forgotten magic — and find redemption in the dawn.
Xanadu
6.6% ABV
Xanadu – The Milk of Paradise
Imperial Golden Stout · 8.3% ABV
In a fusion of poetry, music, and craftsmanship, Haywards Brewery presents Xanadu – The Milk of Paradise, an ale born from Coleridge’s dream and Rush’s immortal soundscape. This Imperial Golden Stout defies expectation: radiant in colour, yet as deep and contemplative as a dark ale.
Infused with honey, vanilla, and toasted coconut, it delivers a silken, opulent mouthfeel balanced by quiet notes of spice and frost. A beer of paradox — light that conceals darkness, sweetness that lingers into eternity — Xanadu invites drinkers to taste a fragment of paradise itself.

Petes whims
The Pete’s Whims Series is where Haywards Brewery lets the sensible committee leave the room.
These are the beers that began with a passing thought, a raised eyebrow, a half-remembered joke, a flavour experiment, a label idea, or the dangerous phrase: “Actually, that might work.” They do not belong neatly to aviation, mythology, British nostalgia, Rush-inspired grandeur, or the Popkiss and Cinderlace universe. They are the oddments drawer of the brewery, but the good oddments drawer: full of brass screws, old keys, spare fuses, mysterious brackets and one thing you are absolutely certain will be useful one day.
This is the series for creative detours. A beer may arrive here because its inspiration was too peculiar, too personal, too seasonal, too experimental, or simply too cheerfully unclassifiable. Some may be elegant. Some may be eccentric. Some may look as though they were conceived during a brewday, a dog walk, or while staring at the malt cupboard with dangerous optimism.
But that is the point. The Pete’s Whims Series gives Haywards Brewery permission to play.
Within this range, style is a starting pistol rather than a rulebook. A classic recipe might gain an unexpected twist. A strange ingredient might find its moment. A name might come first and demand a beer to justify it. The result is a collection of one-offs, curiosities and small acts of brewing daydreamery, each brewed because, at the time, it made perfect sense.
The labels may wander. The stories may wobble. The beers, however, are still brewed with care, character and the usual Haywards refusal to be boring.
The Pete’s Whims Series is for the beers that asked, “Why not?” and received the only acceptable answer.
Brewed on instinct. Filed under inspiration. Best enjoyed before anyone asks too many questions.

Beer Family
Popkiss_Cinderlace
A legacy of invention, refinement, and a little necessary madness.
In the half-imagined world of steam, brass, and eccentric genius, the Popkiss and Cinderlace families stand as twin pillars of invention and elegance. For generations they have inhabited a parallel age — one where laboratories glow beside drawing rooms, dirigibles hum over cobbled courtyards, and the boundary between science and art is cheerfully ignored.
The House of Popkiss, ever the tinkerers and alchemists, pursued the transformation of malt and metal with equal enthusiasm. Their workshops echoed with the hiss of steam coils and the clatter of copper stills as they sought to distil curiosity into craft. Across the aisle, the House of Cinderlace favoured grace over gearwork — herbalists, perfumers, and philosophers of taste who believed that true refinement lay not in invention alone, but in its harmony with beauty.
Though born of different temperaments — one fiery, one floral — their union produced a dynasty unlike any other: a family whose genius expressed itself not in politics or empire, but in the creation of remarkable beers.
Today, their legacy is celebrated anew in the quiet village of Cross Houses, Shropshire, where brewer Pete Hayward revives the Popkiss–Cinderlace spirit through a series of tribute ales. Each beer interprets a member of the lineage — their quirks, their brilliance, and their stories — re-imagined for the modern age.
These are not mere recipes, but character studies in liquid form: the bold invention of Petrosius, the golden eccentricity of Alemandria, the floral poetry of Lucasta, and the disciplined grace of Temperance. Through malt, yeast, and imagination, the Popkiss and Cinderlace dynasties live again — their steampunk world reborn in glass, and their legacy preserved one pour at a time.

Fuggle, East Kent Goldings and a restrained touch of Bramling Cross bring earthy English bitterness with a faint hedgerow-fruit lift. Best served cool, smooth and cascading, preferably beside roast meat, mature cheddar, and absolutely no herrings
Sophronia Popkiss 2025
10.9% ABV
Majestic and assured, Sophronia Popkiss defines the house style of Haywards Brewery — a bold union of Belgian artistry and English precision. Pale and aromatic malts form the foundation, layered with orange peel, coriander, and a touch of star anise to create a tapestry of spice and citrus. Fermented warm with a Saison yeast, the beer develops complex fruity esters and a dry, champagne-like finish that commands attention without excess. Both elegant and assertive, Sophronia Popkiss is the brewery’s statement of intent: inventive, disciplined, and unmistakably Popkiss.

Einherjar

Stromkarl

Professor Petrosius Popkiss

A deep mahogany porter infused with delicate smoke and warming spice, Professor Petrosius Popkiss captures the bold curiosity of its namesake. Roasted malts lend coffee and dark chocolate undertones, while a trace of smoked malt evokes the alchemist’s furnace. Cinnamon and clove add a subtle intrigue, rounding a beer that is rich yet balanced, comforting yet complex. Crafted in homage to classic English porters and the German Rauchbier tradition, this spiced creation is a true marvel of malt and mechanism
